Scouts

10½ to 14 years. Jump in and get muddy. Give back and get set.

Being a Scout

When you join Scouts, you’ll be introduced to lots of new activities, people and things. Scouts are our older section at 69th Reading – boys and girls with an age range from approximately 10½ to 14. We focus on fun and independence, and aim to run memorable, lasting and exciting sessions. Adventurous activities might include map reading and hiking, caving, kayaking, sailing and air-rifle shooting, while craft, cooking and scientific activities provide some moments of calm. There is still the opportunity to earn badges though!

We meet on Monday evenings from 7:15-8:45pm (term time only), and our regular meeting place is Mapledurham Pavilion (address and map here).

Awards

Scouts start small but think big, always challenging themselves to do more and be more. It starts with an award. Who knows where it might lead? We work on awards and activity badges at our meetings and events, and you can earn others at home through your hobbies.

Uniform and badge placement

You don’t need a uniform to join. And at 69th Reading, our Scouts are pretty casual! But once you’ve settled in you might enjoy blending in. (And if you decide to collect badges, you might need somewhere to put them)

Scout leaders

All of our leaders are trained volunteers working to make Scouts the best it can be, but we don’t just need swashbuckling adventurers to lead our expeditions. We also need tidy-uppers and tea-makers and great listeners from all walks of life – for as much or as little time as they can spare. And we need others to help keep the Scout Group running by serving on the Executive Committee.
